Pontic Greek Language Certificate Course
This course is a structured introduction to Pontic Greek (often called Pontiaka and, in some communities, Romeika/Romeyka) as a living and heritage variety of Greek associated historically with the Pontus region of the Black Sea. Because Pontic Greek has important regional varieties, this course does not pretend that one spelling or one local form is universal. Instead, it teaches students how to recognise core features, read representative forms, understand major dialect differences and use reliable references responsibly.
Official course start: 10 September 2026. Completion window: one year from the official start date. The certification pathway begins on the official start date.
What you will learn
- Where Pontic Greek developed and how its speaker communities were dispersed.
- The relationship between Pontic Greek, Romeyka and Standard Modern Greek.
- How Pontic Greek is written, where pronunciation differs, and why spelling varies.
- Representative Pontic vocabulary with pronunciation and meaning.
- Basic grammatical patterns, noun phrases, pronouns, verbs, negation and word order.
- How to read short forms, dictionary entries and annotated examples.
- How to write and transliterate representative Pontic forms.
- How language, music, oral tradition, migration and identity interact in Pontic communities.
Academic approach
The course distinguishes attested linguistic facts from learner conventions. Examples are marked as representative when they are associated with a particular regional variety. Students are encouraged to compare forms rather than treating dialect variation as error. Core reference points include modern linguistic descriptions of Trapezountian Pontic Greek, research on Romeyka, and specialist Pontic lexicographic resources.
Assessment
Each module ends with a topic-specific quiz. The final module requires synthesis of linguistic, historical and practical material. Completion documentation records completion of this ANLHE educational course; it is not a university degree or a regulated professional licence.
